Is the TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment Course For Me?

(A Quick & Honest Check-In)

“Before doing the TAE, I knew my trade but had no clue how to teach it. Now I train new apprentices and love it.” Daniel, former tradie turned trainer

What is the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment Qualification?

So, you’ve got skills. Real-world, hard-earned, "people-ask-you-for-help" kind of skills. And now you’re wondering:

“Should I teach this stuff?”

If you want to teach others what you do at TAFE, Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) or workplace training settings you’ll need the TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.

It’s the must-have qualification for anyone who wants to train or assess in Australia’s VET (Vocational Education and Training) system.

To become a trainer, you must be able to prove that you’re competent in the area you want to teach. That means having hands-on experience, not just interest or beginner-level knowledge.

If you’re still building up your skills or haven’t worked in the industry for long, you might need more time in the field before you’re ready to train others.

But is it right for you? Let’s break it down.

Do you actually like people?

Because training = human interaction. A lot of it. If you love sharing what you know, encouraging others, and celebrating those “aha!” moments - great.

If not… well, maybe stay behind the scenes.

Can you deal with paperwork?

TAE = admin. Lesson plans, assessment tools, mapping… it's not just chatting and PowerPoints. If checklists make you twitch, fair warning.

Do you have real experience?

This course won’t teach you your trade—you already need to be competent. What it does is show you how to train others in it. If you're still getting started in your field, hold off for now.

Can you explain stuff simply?

Trainers make complex things easy to understand. If you can talk without sounding like a textbook, you’re ahead already.

Do you believe everyone learns differently?

Some learners race ahead. Some struggle. Your job? Support them all. Patience, empathy, flexibility - those matter more than flashy slides.

What the TAE40122 won’t teach you:

  • How to love teaching
  • How to know your industry
  • How to deal with Kevin who’s always late

What it will teach you:

  • How to design, deliver and assess great training
  • How to support diverse learners
  • How to turn your know-how into real impact

So... is it for you?

If you’re passionate about your field and people, curious about teaching and ready to learn the ropes you might be made for this.

Let’s talk.
