My Journey as a Career Practitioner - Transforming Lives Through Pathways
For over 20 years, I’ve been privileged to work in training and development roles across various sectors, including Job Actives, Centrelink, HR departments, and Registered Training Organisations (RTOs). My career has been a journey of guiding people toward their dreams and witnessing their transformative light-bulb moments—it’s an incredibly satisfying and humbling experience.
Throughout my work with organisations like HELP Employment and Tursa, I’ve helped countless individuals discover their passion and carve out career pathways that resonate with their goals. One of the most rewarding aspects of my work is seeing people realise their potential and take steps they once thought impossible.
I also spent a few years working for a resume writing company, where I learned how to help individuals effectively present themselves to potential employers. During this time, I gained valuable insights into showcasing transferable skills, aligning resumes with job requirements, and crafting compelling cover letters. This experience not only enhanced my understanding of job market expectations but also gave me the tools to empower others to confidently market themselves.
A key focus of mine has always been helping students reduce financial barriers to their education. I counsel students on how to avoid hefty HECS debts by showing them fee-free pathways that allow them to gain significant credit toward their Bachelor’s degree before transitioning into university, significantly reducing their overall debt. Helping someone uncover a more accessible, practical, and affordable way to achieve their dream is a cornerstone of my approach.
My work in these roles naturally led to private coaching, where I now help clients define their pathways while also teaching the next generation of career practitioners. The students I’ve mentored through the Certificate IV in Career Development have gone on to achieve extraordinary things, and their success stories continually inspire me.
One former student now works in the Armed Forces, assisting injured personnel with transitioning into new career paths—a role that is making a tangible difference in people’s lives. Another has started her own thriving career counselling business, empowering others to achieve their aspirations.
Just today, I received a call from a past student who is now the VET Manager at a private school. She shared how she’s implementing positive changes in their careers department and curriculum, helping students prepare for their futures. Her enthusiasm and dedication were heartwarming and a testament to the impact of career development work.
Another highlight comes from students who now work in roles supporting National Rugby League players—specifically helping injured players transition into fulfilling careers post-sport. Knowing that my training has contributed to these meaningful outcomes reinforces my passion for what I do.
Every success story is a reminder of why I love this profession. From guiding individuals to uncover their dream pathways to training career practitioners who go on to create ripples of positive change, it’s a privilege to be part of this journey.
