Grandma’s Apron – Fashion or Function?

Hello aspiring cooks! It's Rhys here. Today we're delving into an often overlooked kitchen staple – the humble apron. My Grandmother, and probably yours, was never seen in the kitchen without one. I wear one too albeit mine is somewhat more conservative that the floral frills Grandma wore! You might be wondering, "Is an apron really that important?" Let me assure you, there’s more than one good reason for wearing one at home or in a professional hospitality kitchen.

1. The Ultimate Mess Protector

Let’s start with the spills. Cooking can lead to chaos. Picture yourself whisking up a storm when suddenly your bowl of flour decides to do the tango across the bench. Without an apron your stylish attire turns into a floury disaster. With your apron on? You're back in action after a shake off and back in clean “civvies” for your after work social gathering.

2. A Touch of Style

Who says aprons can't be fashionable? Say goodbye to plain aprons and even Grandma’s frilly confection – those days are long gone.

Nowadays aprons come in a range of styles and designs – from crossover back to halter-neck, and traditional checkered patterns to those adorned with amusing phrases like "Kiss the Cook." Putting on an apron is a way to showcase your individuality and nothing conveys "I’m skilled in the kitchen" like an apron. Additionally they serve as props for Instagram snapshots. Who's up for #ChefLife?

3. Prioritize Safety

Aprons are not only about maintaining cleanliness – they are also about ensuring safety. Spattering oil, unruly flames and sharp knives are all part of the culinary creative’s experience. An quality apron is your armour against burns, cuts and spills. And believe me you wouldn't want to find yourself explaining a burn somewhere on your body that would have been protected by the apron you left on the hanger! Grandma might give you a lecture after some ice and a cuppa but a head chef is definitely going to let you know that you “aren’t the sharpest knife in the drawer” in no uncertain terms.

4. Pocket Power

A quality apron always includes pockets. Need somewhere to tuck that spatula? Pocket it is! Want to make note of a recipe adjustment? Pocket at your service! Have a concealed supply of chocolate for those kitchen crises? Yes indeed – pocket it is! It's akin to having an extra set of hands at your disposal in a multitasking kitchen.

5. Embracing Tradition and Nostalgia

Aprons hold a special place in my heart because they evoke memories of Grandma’s kitchen, family gatherings and the joy of sharing meals. Even after many years as a chef, every time I put my fresh apron on, I’m transported back to those moments that ignited my passion for cooking.

So there you have it. The humble apron is more than an accessory so next time you step into the kitchen, remember to grab your apron along with your ingredients.

Don't forget cooking is about having a time trying things and savouring the experience. When you put on an apron you can enjoy the experience of preparing your signature dish without stressing about the mess.

Have a great time cooking with joy and smiles, everyone!
