Navigating VET Teaching: What You Need to Know About TAE Qualifications and Your Options as a Teacher

With the deadline approaching for the end of TAE40116 the question that everyone asks is what next?

Do You Need to Upgrade Your TAE Qualification? If you’re a VET trainer in an Australian secondary school, you might be wondering if you need to upgrade to the new TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment. The good news is that, as of now, the answer is no.

As of March 2024, the Standards for RTOs confirmed trainers and assessors must hold either TAE40122 or TAE40116 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment or TAE40110 plus additional units TAELLN411 and TAEASS502.

You should always refer to the Standards to ensure you are meeting the latest requirements.

So, for now, you can rest easy knowing that your TAE40116 remains valid, allowing you to focus on what truly matters: delivering quality vocational education to your students.

Remember, having the TAE credential is one part of the puzzle. It’s important to continue to maintain your vocational competence, industry currency and professional develop that influences your training and assessment practices. Ongoing currency is the key to quality training.

New to VET? Your options as a teacher to become VET Trainer

If you’re planning to deliver VET in your school, it’s important to ensure you meet the necessary qualification requirements. As a qualified and registered Secondary Teacher, you have a few pathways to choose from to comply with the Standards for RTOs:

  1. Work under supervision: With your Secondary Teacher registration, you can work under the supervision of a colleague who holds the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment. However, this requires a detailed supervision plan and regular meetings and support to ensure the requirements of the Training Products are met. This can be time-consuming and may not be the best long-term solution as the supervising trainer/colleague is responsible for all assessment judgements you make.

  2. Work Unsupervised with Additional Skill Sets: There are two newly introduced skill sets that will prepare you for working within the Nationally Recognised VET Framework. Either the TAESS00019 Assessor Skill Set or the TAESS00024 VET Delivered to School Students Teacher Enhancement Skill Set will ensure you have the required knowledge and skills to navigate Training Packages and Accredited Courses, integrate foundation skills into your VET training and participant in quality validation processes. These options allow you to work unsupervised, offering more flexibility and reducing the burden of supervision on your school.

  3. Complete the TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment: For those looking for a comprehensive qualification, completing the full Certificate IV in Training and Assessment ensures you’re fully equipped to design training based on Nationally Recognised Training Products, deliver and assess VET programs independently, and work effectively within the VET sector.

Understanding your options and staying compliant is crucial for providing high-quality VET education. Whether you choose to upgrade your skills with a Skill Set or pursue the full Certificate IV, you’ll be better prepared to guide your students to success in the VET sector. At Blueprint Career Development, our goal is to support beginner trainers and assessors in the VET sector ensuring quality training and assessment.
